Colliery spoil sites have been gaining increasing recognition as sites of great importance for nature conservation in Wales. Their diverse and intricate habitat mosaics support an impressive diversity of flora and fauna that includes numerous rare and threatened species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.
Despite their importance for nature conservation, these sites face many and varied threats that include (but are not limited to) development and inappropriate reclamation. This workshop will provide training on the conservation value and management of colliery spoil sites in Wales, including how to recognise key habitats and associated species. The workshop will be split between an indoor session involving a presentation, and an outdoor session in the grounds of Parc Penallta where you will have an opportunity to see colliery spoil habitats and species.
This workshop is suitable for anyone involved either directly or indirectly with colliery spoil sites, including conservation practitioners and those making land-use and planning decisions. This may include Local Authority rangers/wardens/ecologists/planners, consultant ecologists, Natural Resources Wales staff, Welsh Government staff, local councillors, etc.
This FREE event but will be capped at 20 people maximum, so booking via Eventbrite is essential. Meet at 10am at Parc Penallta Education Centre. Limited parking is available outside the Education Centre, with additional parking available a short walk away in the main visitor car park. A basic level of fitness and mobility will be required to participate in the outdoor session. Refreshments will be provided at the event.

Mae safleoedd tomenni glo yn cael eu cydnabod fwyfwy fel safleoedd o bwys mawr ar gyfer cadwraeth natur yng Nghymru. Mae eu brithweithiau cynefinoedd amrywiol a chymhleth yn cynnal amrywiaeth drawiadol o blanhigion ac anifeiliaid sy’n cynnwys nifer fawr o rywogaethau prin a rhai sydd dan fygythiad, y mae rhai ohonynt ddim i’w cael yn unman arall yn y byd.
Er gwaethaf eu pwysigrwydd ar gyfer cadwraeth natur, gall y safleoedd hyn wynebu nifer o fygythiadau amrywiol sy’n cynnwys (ond heb eu cyfyngu i) ddatblygiadau ac adfer amhriodol. Bydd y gweithdy hwn yn darparu hyfforddiant ar werth cadwraeth a rheolaeth safleoedd tomenni glo yng Nghymru, yn cynnwys sut i adnabod cynefinoedd allweddol a rhywogaethau cysylltiedig. Rhennir y gweithdy rhwng sesiwn dan do yn cynnwys cyflwyniad, a sesiwn awyr agored ar dir Parc Penallta, ble y cewch gyfle i weld cynefinoedd a rhywogaethau’r tomenni glo.
Mae’r gweithdy hwn yn addas ar gyfer unrhyw un sydd ynghlwm â safleoedd tomenni glo, boed yn uniongyrchol neu’n anuniongyrchol, yn cynnwys ymarferwyr cadwraeth a phobl sy’n gwneud penderfyniadau cynllunio a defnydd tir. Gallai’r rhain gynnwys parcmyn / wardeniaid / ecolegwyr / cynllunwyr Awdurdodau Lleol, ecolegwyr ymgynghorol, staff Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru, staff Llywodraeth Cymru, cynghorwyr lleol, ayyb.
Dim ond 20 o bobl gaiff fynychu’r digwyddiad AM DDIM hwn, felly bydd rhaid ichi archebu lle trwy Eventbrite. Cwrdd am 10am yng Nghanolfan Addysg Parc Penallta. Ceir rhywfaint o le parcio y tu allan i’r Ganolfan Addysg, ac mae lle parcio ychwanegol ar gael bellter byr i ffwrdd yn y prif faes parcio i ymwelwyr. Bydd angen lefel sylfaenol o ffitrwydd a symudedd er mwyn cymryd rhan yn y sesiwn awyr agored. Darperir lluniaeth.
