Maya Leonard became a Buglife Vice President in 2019.
M. G. Leonard is an award-winning, bestselling writer of children’s books about beetles both fiction and non-fiction. Her Beetle Boy trilogy – Beetle Boy, Beetle Queen and Battle of the Beetles – has been published in forty countries and she is currently writing the screenplay for a TV series based on the trilogy. She and her beetles have appeared on Blue Peter, Springwatch Unsprung, Countryfile, Sky News, and featured in the BBC documentary, The Bug Couple. She works closely with the RES on their National Insect Week initiative and with the Natural History Museum entomology department on its outreach events. Her newly published debut non-fiction title: The Beetle Collector’s Handbook, has been nominated for the Blue Peter Book Award 2019 and Scholastic will be publishing the first title in a new series of picture books about beetles by M. G. Leonard in 2020.
Maya lives in Brighton with her husband, two sons and pet Rainbow Stag beetles. She spent her early career in the music industry running Setanta Records, an independent record label and managing bands, most notably The Divine Comedy. After leaving the music industry, she trained as an actor, dabbling in directing and producing as well as performing, before becoming a digital producer for Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and Harry Potter West End.
